Symphonic Etudes
Symphonic Etudes is my major orchestral work to date and encompasses years of reflection and labor. The fundamental algorithm of the Etudes is the concept of rotation, in both constructive and figurative sense. The whole cycle rotates around its own axis and around an invisible outer point.
Each etude as such, including its multiple inner layers, is subordinated to the same algorithm. Thus, the entire composition appears as a system of concentric spheres, each rotating on its own orbit, with its own speed and angle of inclination.
This type of sonic construction is modelled after the fundamental law of the Universe, in which the principle of rotation permeates everything: from the tiniest atom to the clusters of galaxies and the Universe as such. While working on the Etudes, I aspired to absorb and to convey to the listener the polyphonic interlacing of these cosmic algorithms.
The first bars of the Etudes were drafted in 1994 in Kiev. Then the score was maturing for decades, while I continued to work on it in all the places where I settled: in Weimar and in Venice, in New York and in Jerusalem, in Paris and in Vienna. The premiere of the Etudes finally took place in September 2024 in Kiev, where its first bars were drafted thirty years ago. Thus, this composition made a broad circle in space and time, eventually returning to the point of its origin. This is yet another proof that rotation governs all universal processes, both in macro- and in microworld
